Welcome to David Carrington's site

I have been an independent consultant since 2001, drawing on 25 years experience of senior management positions in charities, the last 13 as Chief Executive, and Board member experience with over a dozen organisations, including a University, the Media Trust, Alliance Publishing Trust, the National Foundation for Youth Music and the New Opportunities Fund. I am also a member of the Social Investment Task Force and the Commission on Unclaimed Assets and Chair of the editorial group of the Philanthropy UK e-newsletter.

This site provides information about the work that I undertake, details of the organisations of which I am currently or have been a Board member or Trustee and my career summary. I've also included in the site some talks I have given and articles I've written. There are also links to the sites of organisations with which I am or have been involved.

Introduction To My Work

I work - both on my own and as a member of project teams - with:

  • Funding organisations in the charitable, statutory and corporate sectors
  • Charities, social enterprises and other 'not for profit' and community organisations
  • Individual philanthropists and organisations wishing to encourage new philanthropic initiatives
  • Charity advisers (solicitors, auditors, investment and wealth managers, communications and organisational specialists)

On:

  • The review and evaluation of existing strategies, programmes and practice
  • The development and implementation of new policies and activity
  • The introduction of new ways - through, for example, Programme Related and Mission Connected Investment (Social Investment) - of financing voluntary organisations, social enterprises, neighbourhood renewal and community regeneration
  • Training in grant making and grants management, leadership, governance and risk management
  • The promotion of personal philanthropy and the support of individual philanthropists
  • The selection and induction of senior staff, providing an independent contribution to the recruitment process
  • The personal and professional development of individual Board Chairs, Chief Executives and other senior staff to help them address the challenges of leadership, to clarify options and to resolve problems.

In all my work, I strive to help organisations strengthen themselves by diversifying the ways they use financial and other resources and by enhancing their standards of governance and management practice.
